How Gemini chooses

How Gemini decides which businesses to name

It often answers from memory

Gemini can look things up with Google Search, but for many buying questions it answers from what the model learned in training. In our measurements it searched before only 5% of its answers to shopping questions.

Memory changes slowly

A brand that is well known to the model can be recommended without any search, and a newer brand can be missing for the same reason. Answers from memory change mainly with new model versions.

It names retailers

Gemini often points shoppers to where to buy (large retailers and marketplaces), so your presence on those platforms shapes its answers.

Google-Extended is a separate switch

The Google-Extended robots.txt token controls whether your content is used for Gemini models. It doesn't affect Google Search or AI Overviews.

FAQ

Gemini visibility questions

Why does Gemini give a different answer from ChatGPT?

The two engines rely on different sources: ChatGPT mostly searches the web live, while Gemini often answers from what it learned. A brand can be strong on one and missing from the other, which is why we measure each engine separately.

How can a newer brand appear in Gemini's answers?

By being described consistently across the sources models learn from and search: reviews, expert articles, retailers and your own pages. Changes in live answers can show within weeks; changes in the model's memory take longer.

What does grounding mean, and how does Gemini choose its sources?

Grounding means Gemini searches Google before it answers and builds its answer on the pages it finds, citing some of them. When it doesn't search, it answers from what the model learned in training. A business can do well in one case and be missing in the other.
